About

ETH SPACE - PLATFORM FOR SPATIAL TRANSFORMATION

ETH RAUM is the new ETH platform with a wide range of services in spatial development. We link practice with research and facilitate mutual exchange. With the new MAS in Spatial Development and the three CAS programs, the focus is on spatial development, planning practice, process design and the city as a laboratory of the future.

With our compact courses, we also offer the opportunity to deal with current topics in a sprint.

The development of our living space towards sustainable structures and processes is one of the greatest challenges of our time. This transformation encompasses ecological, spatial, social, infrastructural, technological and economic aspects in equal measure, and there are hardly any standard solutions for the challenges involved. The more complex these fields of action become, the faster the demands on spatial planning methods, processes and instruments change.

Spatial developers are increasingly faced with the question of how to transform existing landscape and building structures to make them fit for the future. Design, process design, informal and cross-border approaches are therefore becoming increasingly important in the design of our living spaces. Equally important are more agile, cooperative forms of collaboration between public, civil society and private stakeholders and various spatially relevant disciplines. This is why, today more than ever, there is a need for different actors to work together in an interdisciplinary manner and across institutional boundaries.

With its new modular program, ETH Zurich is offering a comprehensive and well-founded university continuing education course on the most pressing issues of the future in spatial development. As an interdisciplinary program, it teaches not only the ability to think in a networked way, but also the tools, methods and skills needed to bring spatial change processes to fruition.

Where and how do I apply?

Applications for the MAS and CAS are made via the School of Contiuing Education. Link! On your page, after all the information, you will find the Apply now button.

What do I need for approval?

A university degree recognized by the ETH at Master's level or an equivalent level of education (including university of applied sciences) and two years of professional experience after graduation in a field related to spatial planning.

Who is the training aimed at?

All programs are aimed in particular at experts who work in urban, project and real estate development as well as in cantonal and communal administrations on issues and projects relating to spatial development, the design of stakeholder-oriented processes and dealing with possible futures. This includes Swiss and foreign experts and managers who have completed a university education in fields related to spatial development (architecture, geography, engineering, natural sciences, law, humanities, social sciences, etc.) as well as people with professional experience in the field of spatial and project development. Admission to the continuing education programme is open to anyone who holds a Master's degree recognized by the ETH or an equivalent qualification and can provide evidence of two years of professional experience in a field related to spatial planning after graduation. The Head of Studies decides on final admission. Participants must be able to continue their education at an academic level for two years while working and largely independently. Good oral and written German and English language skills are required.

What degrees are offered?

The ETH RAUM platform offers three part-time Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) and one Master of Advanced Studies (MAS). The MAS comprises at least 63 ECTS credits and has a modular structure. It consists of the individual CASs, which can be attended separately. The MAS course lasts between 4 and 12 semesters. A CAS is completed over a period of 6 months. It comprises a total of 5 teaching modules of 5 days each (Mon-Fri) with 15 ECTS credits (approx. 300 contact hours). The change from the CAS programs to the MAS program takes place after the end of the third CAS. In the near future, summer schools will be added to the program.

How are the individual offers structured?

Methodology

A CAS lasts 6 months. It comprises a 5-day introduction and 5 teaching modules of 5 days each (Mon-Fri) with 15 ECTS credits (approx. 300 contact hours). Each module is completed with a performance assessment. In a Design Studio, the interdisciplinary practical project, participants use the example of a specific case to explore selected methods and approaches in depth and develop tailor-made solutions and options for action. They are supported in this by experts. The CAS is supplemented by individual in-depth study, self-study and excursions. The combination of different forms of learning and didactic methods reflects the diversity of the participants' learning objectives and professional skills. The language of instruction is German. The introduction is a compulsory part of the curriculum, the lectures are optional. The performance assessment of the introductory module only has to be passed once and can be repeated once.

Who is behind the ETH RAUM continuing education program?

ETH Zurich's continuing education program combines the latest research findings with critical reflection and practical problem-solving skills. This inspires and motivates. The courses offered by the ETH RAUM cluster are provided by professorships and institutes of the Network City and Landscape (NSL) as well as by experts from the Future Cities Laboratories, other universities and, of course, knowledge carriers from the field.

How much time does it take?

All CASs are completed over a period of 6 months. They comprise a total of 5 teaching modules of 5 days each (Mon-Fri, 9.00-17.15) with 15 ECTS credits (approx. 300 contact hours). Each module is completed with a performance assessment. The time required is approximately 20 full-time equivalents (for the attendance weeks) plus preparation and follow-up work. Finally, MAS graduates write their Master's thesis.

What is the compulsory introductory module Fundamentals of Spatial Planning?

The introductory module introduces students to the basics of formal spatial planning in Switzerland. In self-study as well as in individual lectures, participants are prepared for the examination of the introductory module. The basic legal and administrative framework of spatial planning at all three levels of government (communal land use planning, cantonal structure planning, federal sectoral planning) is taught. This lays a common foundation for the structure of the entire course, which takes into account the different requirements of the participants.

What skills profile characterizes the graduates?

The ETH RAUM continuing education program at ETH Zurich provides a sound interdisciplinary education in the field of spatial development at various scales. Graduates are provided with specialist knowledge and working tools that will enable them to take on important functions in the private and public sectors in the context of their further professional activities in spatially relevant areas. Successful graduates are able to analyze complex spatial problems, taking into account various planning-relevant disciplines, design strategies for sustainable spatial development and formulate recommendations for action for public and private stakeholders. Particular emphasis is placed on aspects of resilience, design and process design as well as their implementation with formal and informal instruments.

Professor of Practice

Professor Damian Jerjen

professor in practice, image

Damian Jerjen is currently Director of the Swiss Association for Spatial Planning EspaceSuisse and a lecturer at ETH Zurich and other Swiss universities. The economist and spatial planner is also a member of the Spatial Planning Council. With EspaceSuisse, he supports and networks spatial planning stakeholders throughout Switzerland and is involved in the Spatial Development Network. He is a lecturer and member of the advisory board of the MAS in Spatial Development at ETH Zurich. He is also involved in the curriculum development of the Master's degree program REIS, which starts at the beginning of April 2024.

Dear Damian. Congratulations on your appointment as Professor of Practice in Spatial Planning at ETH Zurich. What opportunities and tasks does this role entail at ETH Zurich?

Thank you very much. I am very much looking forward to this position. My focus is on basic education at D-BAUG. Together with Dr. Gabriela Debrunner, I am responsible for the lecture "Fundamentals of Spatial and Landscape Development" in the Bachelor's degree in "Spatial Engineering" (RING). I will also be offering a seminar on settlement quality in the Master's degree course "Spatial Development and Infrastructure Systems" (REIS). I will also supervise students in their Master's and Bachelor's theses and work on the interdisciplinary project in the REIS Master's program.

What are the main areas you would like to focus on in the training of spatial planners?

The practice. Thanks to my ten years as a cantonal planner in the canton of Valais and my current role as Director of the Swiss Association for Spatial Planning EspaceSuisse, I have a good insight into the current challenges and issues of spatial planning practice. I would like to contribute this experience to my teaching activities at ETH Zurich. Students should understand spatial planning as a coordinating and forward-looking discipline. Whether it's questions of high-quality inner-city development or climate change - spatial planning offers concrete tools and methods.

What opportunities do you see to link spatial planning research and spatial planning practice even more profitably?

From my first contacts with the staff at the IRL, I noticed that the research there is very well positioned and addresses relevant issues. EspaceSuisse is close to the cantons, municipalities and cities. Thanks to this network, the connection to practice can certainly be strengthened and, in turn, current issues from practice can be introduced. Specifically, I am thinking, for example, of how necessary it is to take a more interdisciplinary approach to problems.

What does your integration at ETH look like and specifically in the Institute of Spatial and Landscape Development (IRL) and the ETH RAUM platform?

I will mainly be involved in the ETH RAUM platform. This is ETH Zurich's new platform, in which the MAS and the three new CAS continuing education programs are located. Together with the existing activities of ETH RAUM, the Professorship of Practice complements the PLUS and SPUR research groups and is intended to strengthen the connection to the actors in practice with the aim of enabling spatial transformation.
